Finalists revealed for Britain’s top sustainable businesses honour
SIXTY of the UK’s most environmentally sustainable businesses have been shortlisted for one of the country’s most coveted awards – a Green Tourism Goldstar.
Accommodation providers, visitor attractions and events venues across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have been included in this year’s Goldstar shortlist which has been whittled down from more than 2,400 eligible entries.
All of the contenders are vying for the top accolade in 13 categories, the winners of which will be announced at the Green Tourism Annual conference on November 10 at a special ceremony held in the Palace Hotel, Manchester.
Now in its fourth year, the annual awards honour those businesses and organisations that have done the most to promote sustainability within the tourism industry by implementing cost-saving practices that help the environment, improve customer services and benefit the bottom line.
All of the finalists, which include 36 from England, 22 from Scotland, one from Wales and one from Northern Ireland, were chosen from over 2400 green tourism companies assessed for their innovation, cost savings and green ambassadorship.

“A total of 60 green tourism businesses from across the UK have been shortlisted for the Goldstar Awards this year out of more than 2,400 entries. These finalists represent the best of the best, the top 3 per cent of Green Tourism businesses in the UK.
“The standard has been exceptionally high this year and every one of the shortlisted finalists have shown a dedicated commitment to providing consumers with great service and value for money while at the same time championing the cause of sustainability.”
Green Tourism was launched 17 years ago and is now is the biggest of its kind in the world having helped nearly 10,000 businesses improve their commitment to sustainability. It is considered one of the most rigorous of its kind and is the only certification programme independently validated by the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) on behalf of VisitEngland, VisitWales and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, and endorsed by VisitScotland and Failte Ireland.

We are gearing up for what we hope will be another exciting, varied and enjoyable year. Our off season hasn’t been very quiet at all as the business community has kept us very busy and they are doing some great things over at the Dairycrest site including renewable energy development and new developments too.
Our first wedding for the year has already been held and we wish Peter & Jill all the best for the year and a special wish to Jill who is doing really well. We have many weddings and large events this year and it will be our busiest yet and we are so pleased to be welcoming back familiar faces who will be reliving wonderful times held here at PCH. Due to the number of events this year we have decided to extend our very successful parking area onto a second lawn in front of the house. This will be clearly marked but also covered in lush Cornish Lawn to blend in well with the environment. We will be able to accommodate up to 35 cars now which should be more than enough for all our 2014 events and many more in the future.
Our only major development is our new Biomass boiler which is supplying heating and hot water much greener, and we are able to relax and heat the house more, and more efficiently too. A long term improvement which will show many advantages in the years to come.
Warm Peace of Mind
Winning year after year
We ourselves are also celebrating as we have again been confirmed as finalist for the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2013/14. We will be presented with Bronze, Silver or Gold on the 7th November. This will be our 3rd tourism award in 3 years and this year we are up against some formidable multi-million pound operations, so it will be interesting to see how us, ‘the little guys’ do! We will continue to strive for excellence year on year, however, we have decided that we will take a break from the award process for a few years.

It is surely the best compliment that a hotelier or B&B owner can receive. The compliment made by guests returning again and again to your establishment. We feel that actions always speak loudest, and to have people make the effort to return to us is a wonderful thing and fills us with joy. We have noticed more and more that we recognise guests walking back through the door, even if it has been years not months since their last visit. It tells us that we are doing something right and also that we have to maintain or better still improve standards to make this compliment justified. Of course over time regular guests will become friends of ours as well as visitors to our house and that is a benefit you don’t receive in many lines of work.
That is great for everyone including the important new guests which we hope to continually attract to make us successful enough to survive in these uncertain times.
So it is with great thanks to all those who have revisited us and our house, and an assurance that the new guests will be met with the same enthusiasm as everyone else we welcome here……..and please do keep coming back!
As we have now reached the milestone of 200 5 out of 5 excellent rated TripAdvisor reviews, you would think we would be pretty pleased with ourselves. And the truth of the matter is…….we ARE!! Absolutely chuffed to bits. But for all the 200 wonderful people who took the time and effort to log on or sign up and write to other about how much they enjoyed themselves, there is always the one, the person that has to ruin it for us and others. I have ranted endless to TripAdvisor about the one review that I know is fake, but the money machine that is this global US company couldn’t care less. They refuse to print my honest feedback and then call me to see if I want to pay them £300+ for a business listing.
But is true Hollywood censored pre watershed swearing “forget them” and focus on all the genuine truthful reviews we have received and to those people and many more we thank you so much and please continue reviewing us as it does keep all us owners/managers/service staff on our toes.
We especially love the good hotel guide reviews we receive and we hope to make it to the Michelin guide at some point in the future as these publications have a real reputation to protect and care about how real the review is.
As you may or may not know we are intrinsically interested and intertwined with sustainability and green holidays. We won the Cornwall Bronze award for sustainability 2012 and we are not resting on our laurels.
The hot weather is doing wonders for our solar thermal hot water generation and afternoon showers are essentially free minus water costs. But what of winter and cooler darker days? We have long agonised over our burn of LPG gas and its consequences and we have a solution in action. We are into week two of the build to create a purpose built plant room to house a brand new efficient Biomass Pellet Boiler. This is a carbon neutral solution to heating and hot water that will mean the house will always be warm and the water piping hot. We will be able to heat the house and water in a way that means guests will always have what they need and we will not be contributing to fossil fuel consumption.
The house will benefit, the environment will too and we will be able to protect ourselves against rising fuel costs. Afterwards we literally will be ‘Cooking on Gas’ [only!]
We hope you agree our efforts and outlay is well worth while.
We are as pleased as anyone to see a weather report showing sun sun sun for a week or more at least. With the sun out everyone can see and do everything they want to and here in the west of England the air temperature is just a bit cooler and fresher without the smoggy, humid temperatures to can get in the east or near very large cities. Boscastle charity duck race is Sunday the 7th and Delabole Carnival week starts soon to which will mark the start of carnival season.
There is pretty much something to do every weekend in terms of events, shows or occasions and we have a feed form Visit Cornwall on our website which is continually updated with events all around the county. http://www.pendragoncountryhouse.com/awards-and-reviews/links/
of course all this happens every year come rain or shine in Cornwall but the sun just seems to make it all the better and give families especially many more options of what to see and do. I like so many have eternally fond memories of beach holidays in Cornwall. Some more great memories will be formed this week and next i am sure.
